France: EU Product Safety and REACH Compliance

France follows European Union product safety and chemical regulations.

General Product Safety:

Baby clothing must comply with the EU General Product Safety framework, ensuring products placed on the market are safe for consumer use.

Flammability:

While not as prescriptive as U.S. sleepwear laws, garments must not present unreasonable fire risk and must comply with applicable EU textile safety expectations.

Chemical Restrictions (EU REACH):

Under EU REACH, strict limits apply to:

  • Azo dyes
  • Nickel release (metal components)
  • Lead and cadmium
  • Phthalates
  • Formaldehyde

France has also taken a proactive stance on reducing PFAS (“forever chemicals”) in textile products.

Drawstring Safety (EN 14682):

Children’s clothing must comply with European safety standard EN 14682, which restricts cords and drawstrings in children’s garments.

Labeling:

  • Fiber composition must follow EU Textile Regulation requirements.
  • Care labeling must use approved symbols.
  • Information must be clear and not misleading.

All baby garments are tested through accredited third-party laboratories to ensure conformity with EU chemical and safety standards.
