Australia: ACCC and Mandatory Safety Standards

Australian regulations are enforced by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) under the Australian Consumer Law.

Flammability (Children’s Nightwear Standard – AS/NZS 1249):

Children’s nightwear must comply with AS/NZS 1249.

Garments are categorized based on fire risk:

• Low fire danger
• High fire danger (must carry specific warning labels)

Proper fire hazard labeling is mandatory for applicable garments.

Care Labelling:

Under the mandatory Care Labelling Standard:

• Fiber content must be stated
• Care instructions must be clear and durable

Chemical Restrictions:

Restrictions apply to:

• Lead
• Formaldehyde
• Certain azo dyes
• Phthalates

All baby garments must undergo laboratory testing to verify compliance with Australian safety standards.
